5. Question Mark vs. Period.
圣经告诉我们“Ask, and you shall receive”,education should be all about the quest for information and transformation。而Information and transformation must begin with the question。令教授赶到痛心的一点是:“The kids enter schools as question marks and they leave as periods.” 让孩子们在成长的过程中,仍然褒有好奇心和想象力,是教育应当却没有做到的。
这里,教授放了一个脱口秀的视频。视频当中说道,在孩子们眼里,世间万物都是蓬勃向上的。“Wait up. Hold up. Shut up. Clean up. Mama, pleeeease let me stay up!” You’re up. The future is up. Everything you want is up. 但是当孩子们慢慢长大,为人母为人父的时候,只会盯着自家的熊孩子管教说:“Calm down. Slow down. Sit down. Put that down.” Everything is down.
写到这里小编为何又想到了自己当年的演讲题目,“Innocence is what we cannot afford to lose” (此处真不是有意打广告啊哟喂!)。 回到正题,一言以蔽之,教育的目的之一在于leave a man in the condition of continually asking questions,而the question of questions就是如何让人们更加幸福。It is a lifelong pursuit.
6. Thyself.
说到民族文化与世界融合的时候,我们时常听到“民族的就是世界的” 。
同样,教授提出:“What is most personal is most general.” 以及 “We must remember that knowledge of one’s own deep nature is also simultaneously knowledge of human nature in general.” 个人深层本性的认识往往是人类的普遍本性。
Do not ignore the universal within each one of us. 不要总是抱怨世界,抱怨亲朋不理解自己,只要你愿意敞开心扉,就会发现自己不是一个人在战斗。(小编觉得自己已然变成穿着白大褂的心理医生,劝导单身贵族早日脱单的怪阿姨O.O。)
镌刻在希腊德尔斐神庙门楣上的那句 “Know Thyself” 想必大家都耳熟能详,教授在这里说了一句类似的话:“There is one thing and only one in the whole universe which we know more about that we could learn from external observation. That one thing is ourselves. We are in the knows.” 其实,小编觉得,人,才往往是宇宙的一大奥妙所在,令人捉摸不透。
7. Be All You Can Be.
这句话是征兵的宣传语,自然有着鼓舞人心的力量。博士相信,人的发展不是循环,而是像DNA结构一样螺旋上升的形状。Everything is interconnected on the high level on a spiral. 在更高层次上,所有东西都相互联系。【这听着听着像是早期对于物联网(Internet of Things,顾名思义,就是物物相联的互联网)的预测啊!教授眼光真长远!哎扯远了,咱回来。】
何为自我价值的实现呢?教授告诉大家:“The self-actualization of a person, the becoming fully human,the development of the fullest height that the human species can stand up to, or that the particular individual can come to.” 这里小U想起央视在2013年曾经拍过一部公益宣传片《再一次为你喝彩》,很让人感动。Let us all believe in self-fulfilling prophecies.
